Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace – Coming to PlayStation 4 in the West ‘soon’ *Updated*

**Update** Spike Chunsoft has officially announced the game! Launching TODAY (10th December) on the Nintendo Switch is Steins;Gate 0 – digitally. Also launching TODAY is Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace on the PS4, Nintendo Switch and Steam – also digitally.

Here is the trailer:

Back in August, Gematsu reported on Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace being classified by the Australian Rating board. However, since then the listing they link to within their article has been taken down and there’s been no further update or confirmation from Publisher Spike Chunsoft or developer 5pb.

However, whilst browsing the latest North American PSN ‘The Drop‘ article, which shows you all the new releases coming next week as well as a small piece of info about them, I noticed something rather exciting. On display in between the PSVR space-based Shuttle Commander and the simply awesome Superepic, was Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace, launching on the PS4 digitally next week!

However, shortly after contacting Spike Chunsoft to try and secure a review copy of this Steins;Gate spin-off Visual Novel, all traces of the game was removed from the official Playstation Blog. Thankfully, I still had the tab open so let’s take a look at what it originally said…

The Blog before it was removed.

Fall in love with the lab members all over again in this sweet and slapstick romantic comedy! Explore the private life of Rintaro and your favorite lab members in a series of ‘What if?’ scenarios, a slapstick story, and through interactions with Rintaro’s cellphone!

One of the obvious omissions is the fact that it’s only coming to the PS4 and not the PS Vita. Whereas this will upset some people, it’s almost expected these days as a lot of publishers (and even Sony) have given up on the handheld console, favouring the Nintendo Switch as the go-to portable platform. I know some of you won’t be happy though as it’s actually on the Vita, in Japanese only, so that clearly shows that the game ‘does’ work on the handheld, unlike Steins;Gate Elite from earlier this year which was a complete remake that used the anime instead of the original artwork.

It appears Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace (Steins;Gate: Hiyoku Renri no Darling) has only released in Japanese up until now, initially launching for the Xbox 360 back in 2011. Since then, it’s been released on the PSP, PS3, PS Vita, iOS and most recently, the Nintendo Switch in March 2019. However, if the PlayStation Blog post is to be believed, and I have no reason to doubt it at all, the game is going to be coming to the West soon for the PlayStation 4 (possibly the Switch and Steam as well – just like Steins;Gate Elite did earlier this year). An Xbox version is also a possibility but I wouldn’t hold your breath as recent Spike Chunsoft published titles haven’t arrived on that platform.

The game itself isn’t a mainline title in the franchise, it’s a spin-off romantic comedy that is set within a different world line than that of the original game. We’ve yet to play the game but going off the Wiki and information of the Japanese version, Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace focuses more on the relationships within the narrative whilst also offering you many branched-pathways – although no game over or ‘failure’ routes (which is interesting).

We’re super excited that the game has finally been unofficially confirmed by PlayStation themselves here in the West and I hope we don’t have to wait much longer until we can get our hands on it! Are you also excited about finally getting the chance to play the Japanese-only title?
