Beyond a Steel Sky was set to launch on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo platforms in four days, on the 30th of November. However, due to ‘Worldwide logistical issues’, certain regions have had to delay the digital and/or physical releases at the last minute. Thankfully, this delay hasn’t affected those looking to review the game (such as ourselves), and the embargo for our review hasn’t changed despite consumers not being able to get their hands on the game here in the UK until a week later.
The information we were provided, regarding the delay, was very informative and descriptive, but it is a little confusing. So, I’m going to break down when you can now purchase the game in each region and on the various platforms…
Here in the UK:
• The PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X Digital AND Physical editions will now launch on the 7th of December.
• The Physical Nintendo Switch edition will also launch on the 7th of December.
• The Digital Nintendo Switch edition will, however, still launch as planned on the 30th of November.
In North America:
• The PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X Digital AND Physical editions will now launch on the 14th of December.
• The Physical Nintendo Switch edition will also launch on the 14th of December.
• The Digital Nintendo Switch edition will launch on the 7th of December.
In Australia:
• The PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and the Nintendo Switch Digital editions will launch on the 30th of November.
• The PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and the Nintendo Switch Physical editions will now launch on the 17th of December.
Everywhere else, such as in the EU:
• The PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X Digital AND Physical editions will launch, as planned, on the 30th of November.
• The Digital Nintendo Switch edition will also launch on the 30th of November.
• The Physical Nintendo Switch edition will launch on the 2nd of December.
The Apple Arcade and PC versions of the game launched last year, so they’re already out to purchase/play.
As you can see, most regions and platforms will have a delay between one and three weeks – we’ve not been given any further information regarding the delay other than what we’ve written above, so I don’t really want to speculate what the reason could be.
However, you may be interested to know that I’ve completed the game on both the PS4 and PS5, obtaining both platinum trophies, and tried out the various visual/performance modes on offer and even completed the whole game with the director’s commentary enabled (which was added to the PC version post-launch). My review will be up for the embargo next week along with a lot of technical information which was kindly provided by Microids, breaking down the quality and resolution targets for every platform – so, if you’re looking at picking up the game, keep an eye out for our review.
If you’re new to the series (as Beyond a Steel Sky is the second game), you can download and play the original game, Beneath a Steel Sky, for FREE on multiple stores. You can grab it here on STEAM and GOG. I’ve personally not played the original (I’m planning on playing it this weekend), yet I never felt lost or confused as Beyond a Steel Sky gives you plenty of exposition and backstory when it’s needed.
Are you picking up the game? If so, are you upset that you have to wait (potentially) a few more weeks? Let us know.
