Peppa Pig: World Adventures (PS5) Review

Peppa Pig is back, this time on her travels with her new friend cruising around the world in Peppa Pig: World Adventures, the sequel to the 2021 game My Friend Peppa Pig, which is once again developed by Petoons Studios and published by Outright Games.

As with my review of My Friend Peppa Pig, I handed the controller to my now 5-year-old daughter to play the game and give her take on it. Though her interest in Peppa Pig has wavered over the last year or so, she was still very excited to go on another adventure with Peppa.

The offset to Peppa Pig: World Adventures is similar to that of My Friend Peppa Pig where you get to create your own character to interact with Peppa. The options to choose from are again the same, you can choose to be a boy or girl and which animal friend you wish to be. You then have the option to change the colour of your outfit and add accessories such as glasses and a hat. This time my daughter chose to be a sheep, like Suzy sheep from the cartoon, and she gave her a pretty bow to sit on her head.

Once her character was created the game introduced her to the very simplistic control scheme, teaching her how to move in the 2D environment and interact with what Peppa loves doing the most – jumping in a muddy puddle! A negative I found with My Friend Peppa Pig was that you literally only pressed one action button to interact with all the activities in the game. I felt that this didn’t give children the opportunity to interact fully with the controller and get comfortable with all the buttons, especially, if this is their first video game. With Peppa Pig: World Adventures this is largely the same, however, there were a few activities, such as ringing the bell on the bus in the London trip, that required you to press other face buttons on the controller and not just the single one.

This pleased me to see the addition of more button prompts and helped to vary the experience a little, especially as my daughter was now a year older and capable of dealing with more complex gameplay tasks. She once again had no difficulty in playing the game completely on her own and I can easily recommend this game for children starting their journey in playing video games.

After the initial onset of character creation and movement, my daughter was delighted to find that you can now create a family for your character and meet Mr Bull and Mr Rhino to build your own home! This was a great way for her to connect the game to our family at home as she swiftly created a mummy and daddy and a big pink house with a swing outside. Again, the house creation section was very simple with options to choose the colour of the house; window, door and roof options; and an item to pick to have outside that includes a slide, tree, bush, swing, tent or chicken… yes chicken! I was surprised she chose the swing and not the chicken as she always enjoys playing with animals, such as our guinea pigs at home.

Though she enjoyed the element of creating a family, she was very eager to meet Peppa Pig, and kept asking “when do I get to play with Peppa?”. Her wish was soon granted as Peppa and her family are introduced, and she’s swiftly tasked to head to the Playgroup. On the way to Playgroup, you can choose to ride your bike there which helps to make traversal a bit quicker and you can also ring the bell which my daughter did constantly. You can also interact with flying a kite, but my daughter said she did that in the first game so had no interest in doing it again.

At Playgroup Madame Gazelle, Peppa’s teacher, explains that is International Day and a cruise ship has arrived at the harbour. Heading back home, you meet Captain Olga Otter who explains that new families are given the opportunity to travel the world and your parents state that as they have just moved in they can’t go on a trip but are happy for you to go with Peppa’s family (very trusting parents, especially as you have only known Peppa for less than a day!). You all jump in Peppa’s family’s car and head to the harbour and it is here where we learn of all the places of the world that we can visit. There are eight in total, including New York, London, Paris, Australia, Italy, Germany, and Barcelona, and once you have completed all the activities within these locations you get a ticket to head to Hollywood and the chance to meet Super Potato and Hashbrown.

A lot of work has gone in by the developer to make each location feel authentic to its real-world counterpart. It must be stated that Peppa Pig: World Adventures is an incredibly vibrant and colourful game and much the same as My Friend Peppa Pig it looks exactly like the cartoon and is animated wonderfully. Within each location, there are a couple of activities to take part in that again help to match the location you are in such as driving a taxi in New York and helping to make a pizza in Italy.

Throughout the different locations, snippets of educational information are sprinkled in, which was great to see. When visiting Australia, for example, you head to the beach and take a submarine down into the sea to see the beautiful coral reef. At this point it’s explained to the player the importance of the reef and not to take any of it away with you. This was one of my daughter’s favourite parts of the game as she liked how pretty the reef looked and it was great connecting with her about this as I have visited the Great Barrier Reef in Australia myself and could tell her about my experience.
Peppa Pig World Adventures 4+1
Overall it took my daughter around 3 hours to completely see everything on offer with Peppa Pig: World Adventures, this is including a couple of activities that open up once you have visited all the places in the world – some at Playgroup and a task at your home to find Tiddles the Tortoise. It’s not a particularly long game but my daughter was interested in revisiting different countries, especially Germany as it is covered in snow at Christmas time when you visit, and you get to go on a few rides.

Also, there are collectable souvenirs at each location to find which, as a nice touch, when you go back home can be found in various locations in or outside your house, and as you complete each location it unlocks new accessories for your character that can be changed into by interacting with the wardrobe in your room- plus, more options for your house are unlocked too which you can change at any time in the office room of your home.

An absolute bonus to this game is that you can skip dialogue scenes by holding down the action button. This wasn’t present in My Friend Peppa Pig and infuriated me, having to listen to the same scenes over and over when my daughter was playing. What does return from My Friend Peppa Pig, however, is the parental control option of setting a play timer of either 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes – once the timer is up, Peppa will suggest having a sleepover which indicates the end of your playing session for that day. This option wasn’t on by default this time round, so you must choose whether you wish to set it via the options menu.
Peppa Pig World Adventures 5+1
Since the Day One patch I have come across only one slight issue where, after the patch was installed, a couple of souvenirs that my daughter had collected returned to their original spot. On revisiting the location to get them back, the flower souvenir in Barcelona had the button prompt appear but on pressing it nothing happened. I started a new game quickly just to see if this problem persisted but thankfully it did not. You might want to be aware of this issue if you started the game prior to the patch (maybe you picked up the physical edition and haven’t updated it yet) as not being able to collect all the souvenirs does affect receiving a Gold Trophy, if that is of any interest to you.

The publisher has been made aware of this issue, which will hopefully be resolved in a future patch. Other than that, I haven’t come across any other bugs or animation concerns throughout a new playthrough, yet there were numerous issues before the Day One patch (I strongly recommend you update the game for the best experience).

Though my daughter did state that she preferred Peppa Pig: World Adventures to that of My Friend Peppa Pig, because she enjoyed seeing lots of interesting places around the world and meeting new friends, she did mention, however, that the game was very easy and wanted more different things to do. There is definitely a lack of gameplay variety than you find in other games aimed at children, such as the Paw Patrol games, however, I do feel that Peppa Pig is generally marketed towards a younger audience which requires a more simplistic style of game.

My only other small gripe with Peppa Pig: World Adventures is that there are a lot of load screens when moving between scenes and while they aren’t as long as they were in My Friend Peppa Pig, they are still longer than I would have expected while playing the PS5 version of the game. It’s not a major issue, as my daughter never complained about the load screens, but I was surprised to see them still so numerous – maybe the game isn’t taking full advantage of the SSD?

Final Conclusion:
Peppa Pig: World Adventures once again absolutely nails the look, feel and sound of the cartoon show. It definitely is an experience primarily aimed at 3 to 5-year-olds, with simplistic gameplay and a short gaming experience. I was happy to see educational moments throughout and that developer Petoons had improved upon My Friend Peppa Pig by including more activities that use different button prompts and allowing you to skip dialogue scenes. My daughter hopes that there will be additional places to travel to through DLC, much like the Pirate Adventures DLC that came to My Friend Peppa Pig, as she wishes to set sail again and go on more world adventures with her friend Peppa Pig.
