Phantom Doctrine released yesterday on the PS4 and PC with the Xbox One version receiving a last-minute delay until the 24th of August – clearly one of the evil doings from the Beholder Initiative!
If you haven’t already, you can check out my long and detailed review (over 4.1k words) here:Â https://www.gamepitt.co.uk/phantom-doctrine-ps4-review/
In my review, I talked about a number of bugs and issues present within the game on the PS4 as the review copies which were given out were all based on an older code, much older than the Xbox and PC versions at the time. As such, I received the update last night and spent about seven hours this morning playing through various missions to see what’s changed.
I can happily say that all the issues I encountered have been quietly been eliminated by allied agents and everything seems a lot more robust now. Here is the full list of patch notes for the 5GB update – forgive the chopping together, it was rather long!
So, is Phantom Doctrine perfect now? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how you look at it. After reading a few other reviews last night, it appears some people struggled with the difficulty and the tutorials. I agree that not everything is explained very well and the tutorials could do with being a bit more expansive. As I stated in my review – it doesn’t actually say you can buy things with the R1 button – something I didn’t realise you could do until about 25 hours into my playthrough.
However, with regards to the difficulty, it’s a personal thing that – you aren’t forced to progress the story until you’re ready, so you can grind and research all the various technologies in order to boost your team’s stats and weaponry. So technically, the difficulty increases as you progress and if you find it too hard then you’ve probably progressed too fast.Â
So, I’m happy with the update – I know PC is getting Mods next but I’ll eagerly await the next drop of content or updates on the PS4 version as I can’t wait to see what the team has next in store for us. If you haven’t already – pick up the game today!
